Common Toilet Bowl Problems

The usual culprits are wet wipes, including the ones sold as flushable, along with sanitary products, kitchen roll and cleaning cloths. If the bowl is full, do not flush again or you will flood the floor. Wait for the level to drop, then try a proper flange plunger. If that does not shift it, the blockage has passed the trap and needs equipment. We clear it with a closet auger or high pressure jetting rather than chemicals, which rarely work on a solid blockage and damage the trap while failing.
Almost always the flush valve, the siphon or the fill valve. A worn flush valve seal lets water leak continuously from the cistern into the bowl, silently and around the clock, which is why it shows up on the water bill before anyone notices the sound. It is usually a same-visit fix and often the cheapest job we do all week. A weak flush is a related problem, generally caused by the cistern not filling to the correct level or by limescale blocking the rim jets, which is common in Singapore water and easily cleared.
Water pooling at the base of the bowl usually means a failed wax seal or a cracked pan connector, and it needs the bowl lifted and reseated. Do not leave this one: water tracking under the floor tiles ends up somewhere, and in a flat that somewhere is often downstairs. A broken flush handle or button is simple wear on the internal linkage and we replace the mechanism. If the rest of the cistern internals are close to failing too, we will say so and give you the cost of doing it now against a second call-out in six months. A cracked cistern or bowl is not repairable, and a hairline crack becomes a flood without warning.
